Snowboards are to skiing what hybrid clubs are to golf
The development of snowboarding has become a metaphor for many things off the slopes, including golf equipment. In an article on golf clubs, Mike Stachura writes, “the evolution of the hybrid [club] is similar to that of snowboards: an offbeat, intriguing, even necessary idea with early shortcomings that eventually changed the sport.”
You’ll find that in the May 2010 issue of Golf Digest, which has many of the elements I’d like to see in a snowboarding magazine: articles about equipment (how it evolves and how that affects enthusiasts), personalities in the sport, accounts of interesting destinations (some expensive, some not) , sport-specific fitness tips, and first-person accounts of special moments that reflect on why golf (or snowboarding) is important to the participant. Above all, and setting it apart from snowboarding magazines, it comes with a mature (even boring!) attitude that doesn’t approach me as the 16-year old I am not, and never was.
